Raised on Gender
“Raised on Gender” exhibition at Beit Miriam, in collaboration with the City Museum.
The exhibition explores different aspects of gender in both personal and public spheres-through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. It looks at the process of shaping each person’s gender identity and highlights the subtle, often wordless ways in which this identity is formed, and how it consciously and unconsciously influences our choices throughout life.
Without using words, the world constantly signals to us how we are expected to behave and what defines us: the expectations placed on us even before birth, the toys purchased for us in childhood, the ways we are addressed in kindergarten, consumer products, advertisements, information systems, and even the street and the city we live in - all reinforce gender distinctions, create and maintain gender inequality, and reproduce gendered pathways.
The exhibition offers an invitation to question, to look at reality from a slightly different angle, to put on “gender lenses,” and to rethink what we often assume to be self-evident. Personal, urban, and social contexts are interwoven throughout the exhibition, encouraging visitors to observe, reflect, understand, and perhaps even spark personal and social change.
