Rooftop Cinema: Godzilla in Tel Aviv-Yafo

A contemporary Tower of Babel, an unfinished underground city, a maze not built for those who traverse it.

The "new" central bus station is not just another building – it is not an architectural creation with a life of its own—a place that is both a symbol of urban renewal and a reminder of resonating planning failures. So what is it then?

In a special collaborative evening created by the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum and Cinema Kanada, we will watch innovative screenings that capture the aesthetics, stories, and life behind the central bus station.

A series of short films, a documentary, and a conversation with someone who knows the station like the back of her hand, in an event that is not trying to shape opinion but rethink it. 

What will happen?

19:00 – Doors open on the roof of the museum
Popcorn and music. An opportunity to talk about the view and the central bus station vis-à-vis the city’s conservation efforts. 

20:00 – Screening of three short films (11 minutes total)

•    White Elephant / Ori Peer (1 minute)
•    On The Line / Or Tobias (6 minutes)
•    Inside the Pipes / Adva Santo (5 minutes)

20:15 – Screening of the documentary Last Stop (76 minutes)
Directed by: Julie Shles
The film is neither nostalgic nor architectural. Instead, it presents the perspective of those who live within it, for whom it is not a station but a permanent fixture. 

21:30 – Conversation with Hila Harel
Hila is an urban activist who researches the central bus station through the people in it and will lead a conversation about a place that vacillates between preservation and abandonment and what it means to live in a city that deliberately gives up on parts of itself.

22:15 – Weather permitting, we will return to the roof for music and popcorn.
A brief visit to let everything we’ve seen and heard sink in and come to some conclusions.
