116th Birthday Weekend & City Cake Competition

Tel Aviv-Yafo is celebrating its 116th birthday and would love to share a birthday weekend with you at the City Museum, where we will celebrate Tel Aviv-Yafo's culinary heritage through the cakes, stories, cafés, sounds, and flavors that have shaped and are shaping the city: three days of performances, tours, live art, and culinary discourse, from past to present.

What’s on the schedule?
From Thursday to Saturday, the museum will be filled with experiences relating to the city’s culinary heritage:
Exhibitions | Performances | One-Time Workshops and Talks

Ongoing Exhibitions and Performances:
Prose – Interactive Artistic-Culinary Exhibition with Maya Sharabani: Earn a slice of cake in exchange for a personal story about a taste of the city.
Under Construction – Artist Shay Id Alony constructs a layered cake using building materials sourced in the city.
State of Fluidity – Popsicles flavored with syrups inspired by different locations in the city, created by MELA Studio.
Cold Comfort – A video work by Iyar Dyoman exploring the myth that Tel Aviv-Yafo’s cafés are spaces for creation.
And the Cakes! – Exhibition of six cakes in the final of the City Cake competition, alongside a film by Gili Azgad documenting the judging process. The two winning cakes will be available for sale at the museum’s pastry shop.
Until Boredom Divides Us | When Will We Back in the Loop? – Video works by Or Ilon based on AI, which reveals the fragile city lurking beneath its surface.

Talks and Workshops:
Resistance Café – Meetings and roundtable discussions on food, social justice, and communities.
Creative Family Workshops– Colors, flavors, cafés, and cakes from Tel Aviv-Yafo.
Urban Portrait – Maya Samira captures portraits against backdrops that tell the city's story.

Thursday, April 3, 2025:
Announcement of the Winner of the City Cake Competition in the Presence of the Mayor;
Sweet Confessions – Dana Frank hosts waitresses and waiters from different eras for behind-the-scenes, late-night confessions about Tel Aviv-Yafo’s café and restaurant culture;
Dance Party: Speculative Turntable Performance –Dance Command – Salon music from the cafés of the 1930s to songs written on napkins in cafés in the 60s and 70s.

Friday, April 4, 2025:
Tours of the city’s historic cafés;
Crumbly Memory – A performance of stories and music with Hila Alpert, Avi Belleli, and Galia Hai that traces the history of Tel Aviv-Yafo through its cakes;

Lecture on the cultural evolution of cake;
Panel Discussion on culinary creativity in Tel Aviv-Yafo in times of crisis
