Forty years after the famous shell lottery that gave birth to the first Hebrew city, the State of Israel was declared in that very same place — at Dizengoff House, 16 Rothschild Boulevard.

Led by guide Hezi Shmueli, we will walk the "Independence Trail" through the city's streets, tracing the journey from the Ottoman era, through the founding of the Hebrew neighborhood "Ahuzat Bayit," to the rapid rise of the Yishuv's leading city in British Palestine. Local or global? Hebrew labor or international trade? Through a look back in time, we will explore how the city's spirit and vision are still reflected at the stops along the tour.

Key landmarks: "Ahuzat Bayit" and the Hebrew Gymnasium, "Beit Weiss" and the first houses on Herzl Street, the first kiosk, Dizengoff House at 16 Rothschild Boulevard, Golomb House (the birthplace of the Haganah), the Great Synagogue, Magen David Square, marked by the 1948 Independence celebrations, and the City Museum (the former City Hall).

We will meet at 9 Ahad Ha'am Street and conclude with a guided tour of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa City Museum at the newly renovated Bialik Square.
