Tour of Meir Park with Dr. Chen Misgav | As Part of Pride Week
An urban tour led by Chen Misgav in Meir Park, exploring public space as an arena of identity, visibility, and struggle.
Our gathering in Meir Park in Tel Aviv will take us not only through the park's grounds, located in the heart of the city, but, above all, through the history of the queer community in the city, with a focus on recent decades.
During the tour, we will examine the urban processes experienced by the LGBTQ+ community from the 1990s onward and its relationship with the municipal establishment. We will look at how this venerable and unassuming park became the site of the Gay Center – an important and meaningful institution in community life that recently underwent extensive renovation. We will visit the LGBTQ+ monuments in the park and engage with urban and sexual politics and the ways in which they intersect in Tel Aviv's public space.
Dr. Chen Misgav is a political and social geographer and urban planner. He currently heads the teaching and serves as academic director of the master’s program in Democracy Studies at the Open University and serves as chair of the human rights organization “Bimkom – Planning for Human Rights.” His book, co-authored with Prof. Gili Hartal and examining politics, space, and social relations in LGBTQ+ organizations and community centers, will be published by Routledge next month.
