We’ll Meet in the Square | A walking tour tracing democracy in the city’s public space

How has Tel Aviv-Yafo, over the years, become the central arena where Israeli society tests freedom of expression, active citizenship, and the struggle over the character of public space–what role does the city square play within it?
Join us for a tour that explores democracy as a living, breathing urban system. Along the way, we’ll walk among major squares, local-government institutions, and public spaces, and consider how democracy lives not only in the Knesset or at the ballot box, but also pulses through the streets, the squares, city hall, civic struggles, local decision-making, the right to protest, and residents’ responsibility for shaping the space they live in.

At the heart of the tour, we’ll compare the city’s three main squares, each representing an entirely different facet of Israeli democracy and civil society:
● Rabin Square – a hub of institutional, national democracy: collective memory and formative events.
● Dizengoff Square – an arena of spontaneous, community democracy: an everyday meeting point of city life.
● Habima Square – a space of civic-protest democracy: movement and freedom of expression.

Along the route, we’ll also explore key questions and landmarks that link democracy to urban design: how decisions about street planning, local commerce, the Pride Center, a public garden, tree preservation, and shade shape the right to public space and the community’s quality of life.
We’ll end at the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Museum (27 Bialik Street), where we’ll deepen our discussion of local democracy with a visit to the office of Meir Dizengoff, the city’s first mayor, and other museum highlights. Afterward, participants are welcome to continue exploring the museum at their own pace.
