Nadia Gorenstein Manshiya – Layers of Memory and Oblivion ("The Lottery of Shells"), 2026
Wall jewelry; ancient tile fragments, metal chains
Nadia Gorenstein’s work is composed of tile fragments washed up from the sea along the shores of Jaffa—remnants of houses from the Manshiya neighborhood, an urban area almost entirely erased and buried beneath the landscape of Charles Clore Park. Through the movement of time and water, the fragments have been worn down, softened, and rounded, as if the sea itself sculpted the debris of destruction into delicate objects that bear memory.
Through delicate metalwork, Gorenstein transforms the fragments into pendants—an act of preservation, carrying, and making present. The 132 fragments echo the "Seashell Lottery" of Ahuzat Bayit, juxtaposing the story of Tel Aviv’s birth with the disappearance upon whose ruins the city was founded.
